This episode talks about a big shift in my career that was initiated by attending a Charles Poliquin Course. I talk about the 5 big takeaway points that reshaped my career including Exercise Selection, Hormones, Wellness, Data and Learn more to earn more.
Previous to attending his course I was fairly embarrassed to call myself a personal trainer, i did see it as a low profession due to the easy entry levels and just my general consensus on the industry, i was planning on going back to uni to finish a health science degree and planned on being a physiotherapist or exercise physiologist but something clicked in me when sitting in front of Charles Poliquin for the first time and that was that this profession can be anything i wanted it to be i had set the bar for myself to be the best in my environment but i soon realised my environment and the best in the world was literally miles apart.
The Big Changes.
I already thought a lot about exercise prescription but adding more hand / feet positions, angles, tempos and time under tension gave me a whole new bag of tricks to get the exact response from my programs.
Joint position – Understanding how these points would change muscle recruitment and neural feedback has been something that i have used with clients for body composition nut mainly have given me so many ways on balancing and powering up lagging parts on my athletes.
The changes that this made for me to improve someone’s body composition was unbelievable. Understanding one’s hormone profile added a whole other level for my training, nutrition and wellness programming for my clients.
All of these we will be discussing more in upcoming episodes but for now i just touch quickly on the areas that i have created amazing results for my clients.
2 that are a must to understand are –
Insulin – Is now super common knowledge but it is the one thing that as a trainer / coach if you know how to manipulate you will never be short of clients or money. When someone is insulin resistant you just can’t lose fat effectively and you literally can’t get away with having the odd bad meal, it is the reason for cravings and yo yo dieting where if you can get someone to slide right up to the other end of the scale of being insulin sensitive then they are in a position to gain muscle lose fat and can get away with the odd “bad” meal.
Estrogen – is the second that will have you always busy with clients although a much tricker one to completely master as there is so many varying factors, I have found this to be very common in both men and women in Australia and have really good success with Charles lean legs protocol.
Sleep and Digestion – Again another one that is referred to all the time now but quality sleep and going to the toilet well are sure fire signs you won’t get the results your after.
Setting up sleep time protocols turning off electricals, foods to increase serotonin and supplementation were all things that could change your client instantly and really get them to follow everything you say from then on.
Digestion was a big one for Charles although his supplement routine at the time of this cause was excessive, he was again ahead of the curve on what now seems to be one of the biggest issues with not only body composition but also being linked with mental illness.
Learn from studies but pay attention to results.
Charles has been studying strength training since he was very young and he has the ability to recall information from many studies but what inspires me more is how much he learns from his clients results. He really pays attention to trends and doesn’t wait for the studies to prove he is right, the only way to do this is to pretty much keep super accurate data almost to the extent that you are keeping documents in your own experiment. This is where being very proficient with the caliper, program writing and coaching need to be precise which he is very astute about.
“If your not recording data you’re just a babysitter”
Learn more to earn more
At the time i just thought this was a ploy to justify the very expensive courses he was running but as time goes by i can attest to this statement being very true. Yes you can get a lot of information of the internet these days but actually being in the presence of someone who has learnt this and experienced it in the trenches gives you a level of understanding the internet just can’t give you. You need to pick your courses wisely and most importantly have to implement what is taught but from my experience the more i have learnt the more i have earnt.
I could go on for hours of things learnt from Charles poliquin but i promise you there are some great guests coming up soon who will be covering a lot of these topics and more.
So i am going to leave it there for now.
Hope you all have a great day and see you next week.
